Delaware was established in 1787 making it the 1st state in the United States. Delaware is in the northeast and sits on a peninsula surrounded by water. It’s a smaller state giving residents access to neighboring states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Dover is the capital and is home to companies like Kraft Foods and Proctor & Gamble. It’s also home to Dover Air Force Base. Delaware offers a variety of activities for everyone, from state parks, seashores, beaches, and river walks to restaurants and shops. There are also a number of public colleges in Deleware that we’ll cover in this article.
The University of Delaware (UD)
The University of Delaware (UD) is the largest public university in the state. It has been named one of the top graduate engineering programs in the nation by the Princeton Review. Located in Newark, it’s less than a mile from Pennsylvania and Maryland.
The University of Delaware has roughly 24,500 students enrolled between its main campus in Newark and its satellite campuses in Dover, Wilmington, Lewes, and Georgetown. UD participates in the NCAA Division I sports league, and their mascot, the “Fighting Blue Hen,” named after Delaware’s state bird. Like most universities, it has a variety of degree programs, student organizations, and on-campus housing. Students can also enjoy larger cities such as Baltimore, Philadelphia, or New York City within an hour, depending on rush hour traffic.
Delaware State University
Delaware State University’s (DSU) main campus is in Delaware’s capital city of Dover with two satellite campuses in Wilmington and Georgetown. It’s a historically black college with an estimated 5,000 students and sits on 400 acres.
Delaware State University was named one of the top business schools by Princeton Review, with its motto being “Enter to Learn, Go Forth and Serve.” They are in the NCAA Division I sports league, and their mascot is the Hornets. DSU offers a variety of degree programs, student organizations, and housing options. Students can also explore one of the 30 parks to boat, hike, and fish. For a weekend getaway or day trip, students can drive just a few hours to Baltimore, Washington D.C., or Philadelphia.
Community Colleges in Delaware
Along with these universities, Delaware also has one public Community College called Delaware Technical and Community College. This community college has four campus locations. They are in Georgetown, Wilmington, Staton, and Dover.
