What does a Interpreter/Translator do?
An interpreter and translator's main function is to translate information and content from one language to another language. An interpreter can speak in oral and sign language and a translator would provide the written language. The languages that are expected to be most sought after or in demand would be, fluency in Spanish, Middle Eastern, German, French, Russian and Portuguese, however, one must be completely fluent in the English language above all others and would use at least one other language with equal fluency in their interpreting and translating duties.
In order to become an interpreter and translator you would usually require a bachelor's degree and be fluent in the English language and one other language. The more languages you have command of, the more competitive you become for a job. A lot of work-related experience and/or vocational training would be very helpful. Some people complete job specific training programs in this career field.
Job Description of a Interpreter/Translator
An interpreter and translator maintains message content, context and style in the specified language when translating messages,consecutively or simultaneously, through the use of oral or hand signing. They prepare translations and determine meanings when listening to a speakers' statement or words with the use of electronic listening systems, when needed. They provide information and terminology that has been collected to be applied in medical, legal or technical terms. He or she translates or rewrites material, like, legal documents, news reports or even scientific works from reading written material.
An interpreter and translator ensures the accuracy of the translations of terminology and technical terms and will maintain consistent during the translation revision process. They use encyclopedias, dictionaries and computerized technology banks for reference materials to maintain correctness in translation. They may need to be involved in the supervision and/or training of others in this job or educate teachers, staff, parents or students about the functions and duties of educational interpreters.
An interpreter and translator needs to be knowledgeable of the content, structure, spelling and composition of the English language, as well as, it's grammar, pronunciation, meaning and rules of composition. They require a knowledge of a foreign language, in addition to English, as well as, it's pronunciation, grammar composition, spelling and other areas of the language that would be expected in this job. A knowledge of media and communication is needed, and in addition, government, law and telecommunications.
An interpreter and translator must have active listening skills and speaking skills in order to properly and clearly communicate to others. They use their skills in reading comprehension, writing and instructing others. They maintain cooperative and working relationships with others.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this occupation should show a growth of 46 percent in 2012-2022.
